A Long-Awaited Medical Breakthrough

Millions of women worldwide suffer from endometriosis, a chronic condition often diagnosed late due to the complexity and invasive nature of current methods. The good news is that an innovative saliva test promises to radically change this landscape. Developed by Ziwig and named Endotest, this test uses a unique approach, transforming a long and painful procedure into a simple, quick sample collection.

According to data, the Ziwig Endotest has an overall accuracy rate of 96.6%, with 97.3% sensitivity and 94.1% specificity. This remarkable precision places it among the most effective diagnostic methods available. Unlike surgical intervention, a diagnosis can be available within days, or up to four weeks.

How Does This Revolutionary Test Work?

The secret of Endotest lies in its ability to detect 109 specific microRNAs (miRNAs). These small molecules play a crucial role in regulating gene expression, and in the case of endometriosis, they exhibit specific patterns that can be identified. While research into the link between miRNAs and endometriosis began several years ago, the publication in 2022 of the study on the first saliva-based miRNA signature for this condition marked a pivotal moment.

This non-invasive test eliminates the need for laparoscopic surgery, which is currently the gold standard for confirming an endometriosis diagnosis. Beyond its invasive nature, laparoscopy involves risks associated with any surgical procedure and requires a recovery period. The saliva test, on the other hand, reduces stress and discomfort for patients and significantly accelerates the diagnostic process.

Availability and Hopes for the Future

The test is already available in approximately one hundred hospitals in France as part of a national early access program. This rapid implementation underscores the medical community’s confidence in its potential. The anticipated impact is significant: early diagnosis can lead to the rapid initiation of appropriate treatment, considerably improving the quality of life for affected women and preventing disease progression and associated complications.

The development and implementation of such a precise saliva test for endometriosis represents a huge step forward in reproductive medicine and gynecology. It opens doors to a faster, less invasive, and ultimately more humane approach to managing a complex and often underestimated condition.

Did you know…?

  • What are microRNAs (miRNAs)? They are small RNA molecules involved in gene expression regulation, which can act as biomarkers for various diseases.
  • Why is endometriosis diagnosis difficult? Due to varied symptoms and the fact that the only 100% reliable long-term diagnostic method, until now, was laparoscopy, an invasive procedure.
