Pluto, More Active Than We Thought
Pluto, the distant dwarf planet at the edge of our solar system, continues to surprise us. Though often perceived as a cold, static body, new research reveals unexpected geological activity. Scientists have recently confirmed the first-ever discovery of six massive landslides on its surface, a groundbreaking find for this faraway world.
These discoveries, published on June 13 in the journal Icarus, challenge our previous understanding of Pluto’s crustal stability and hint at dynamic processes shaping its landscape.
Colossal, Even by Cosmic Standards
The landslides were identified within three distinct impact craters, using images captured by NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft. Their scale is truly immense: drop heights range from 1.5 to 2.2 kilometers, with runouts—the distances covered by the displaced material—reaching up to 14.5 kilometers.
One of the most impressive landslides spans approximately 130 square kilometers, which is roughly twice the size of Manhattan. These colossal features suggest significant forces at play on the dwarf planet’s surface.

The presence of such large-scale geological structures raises crucial questions about Pluto’s composition and environmental conditions.
