This technology, crucial for AI’s operation, consumes impressive amounts of energy and, consequently, generates significant carbon dioxide emissions. Carbon Capture and Storage: A Promising Solution
Recent studies suggest that carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies could reduce over 90% of CO2 emissions produced by data centers, especially when considering off-state storage options. Imagine that the exhaust gases from power plants fueling these centers no longer enter the atmosphere but are captured and safely stored underground. This is the promise of CCS.
Vast Underground Storage Capacity
The United States boasts substantial capacity for this operation. No fewer than 34 U.S. states possess saline aquifers with enough capacity to store over 100 years of projected data center CO2 emissions, calculated beyond 2030. These aquifers represent natural underground reservoirs, ideal for carbon sequestration.
According to estimates, by 2025, underground aquifers could store 59 million metric tons of data center CO2, accounting for about 66% of sector emissions. The outlook is even better for 2030, when storage capacity could grow to 299 million metric tons, or 74% of projected data center emissions.
Clean Power for AI
In the near term, a practical solution for providing low-carbon power to AI data centers could come from natural gas plants equipped with carbon capture technology. This approach would allow for a faster transition to more sustainable powering of AI infrastructure, without waiting for the full-scale development of renewable sources.
