After its historic journey through space, the Orion capsule from the Artemis 1 mission is set for another spectacular “landing,” this time in a museum. NASA has confirmed it will loan the iconic capsule to the prestigious Smithsonian Institution.
A New Home for a Space Pioneer
Its future destination is the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC, a world-renowned institution, where the capsule will begin a new era as an exhibit. The official announcement of the transfer, made by NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman, is scheduled for July 1, 2026. October 30 has been set for the capsule’s public unveiling, where it will be displayed in the ‘At Home in Space’ gallery.
An Epic Journey Turned History
Artemis 1, launched in 2022, was a pivotal mission. It served as the first integrated flight test of the Orion spacecraft, marking a significant step in NASA’s efforts to return humans to the Moon and, eventually, send them to Mars. Without a human crew on board, the Orion capsule performed a demonstration flight around the Moon, testing systems and paving the way for future Artemis missions.
