AI Smashes Language Barriers
In an increasingly interconnected world, effective communication across diverse cultures is paramount. The PathSay Project, an innovative initiative, leverages artificial intelligence (AI) to dismantle language barriers, specifically targeting low-resource languages. The goal is to develop powerful translation models even for dialects with limited digital footprint.
Global Collaboration for Language Data
The key to this project’s success lies in a unique collaborative effort. Students from Brigham Young University’s (BYU) MATRIX lab work alongside BYU-Pathway Worldwide students to collect valuable speech and text data. This approach allows for the gathering of an impressive volume of linguistic information directly from native speakers across various regions. To date, the project has amassed over 2,200 hours of audio recordings across 30 languages, including African dialects such as Xhosa, Twi, and Zulu, recorded by students from the African continent.
The Impact of the AI Database
By developing this robust database, the PathSay Project significantly contributes to the advancement of artificial intelligence technology. The collected data enables the creation of AI systems capable of recognizing, generating, and translating text and speech in dozens of languages. This capability opens new horizons for practical applications, from global communication tools to the preservation of indigenous linguistic heritage.
