Could the devices in our pockets be affecting our population?

While smartphones bring countless conveniences, they might also be linked to an unexpected societal shift: a decline in fertility. A recent study by Middlebury College and NBER points to a surprising connection between the accelerated adoption of smartphones and falling birth rates in the United States, particularly among younger demographics. Although not the sole factor, smartphone influence appears substantial, potentially contributing 33% to 50% of the fertility drop in the US between 2007 and 2011.

The iPhone era and its impact on youth

The launch of the iPhone marked a significant turning point, with its effects quickly becoming apparent. Researchers observed a reduction in births by 4.5% to 8% among young women aged 15-19, and by 3.2% to 6.6% for those aged 20-24. These figures highlight a clear pattern: as smartphone access grew, especially in areas with over 90% mobile coverage, the impact on birth rates was more pronounced.

More screen time, less intimacy?

The mechanism through which smartphones might influence fertility is complex. A central hypothesis revolves around changes in social behavior. It appears that intensive smartphone use has led to a decrease in face-to-face personal interactions and, consequently, sexual activity. Simultaneously, an increase in pornography consumption was observed. This combination of factors could contribute to young people’s decisions to delay starting families or have fewer children.
